Freshworks began in Chennai in 2010 when Girish Mathrubootham and Shan Krishnasamy started Freshdesk, a cloud-based customer-support software product. Freshdesk helped businesses manage customer enquiries and support tickets without installing complicated enterprise software. The company later introduced more software products and expanded beyond customer service into areas such as IT service management, sales and employee support. Reflecting this wider product range, Freshdesk Inc. changed its name to Freshworks in 2017. Important products include Freshdesk and Freshservice, while artificial intelligence is increasingly built into the company's software. Freshworks sells subscriptions to businesses around the world and is therefore primarily a software-as-a-service company. It listed on Nasdaq in 2021, becoming one of the best-known global software companies to originate from India's SaaS ecosystem.
