Vedanta's wider business was founded by Anil Agarwal in 1976 and grew from a small metals-trading operation into a large natural-resources group. The present listed Vedanta Limited has a complicated legal history involving Sterlite Industries, Sesa Goa and later corporate reorganisations, so the 1976 date is used for the underlying Vedanta business rather than a later renaming date. Vedanta's operations include aluminium, zinc, lead, silver, oil and gas, iron ore and other metals and minerals. Important businesses include Hindustan Zinc, Cairn Oil & Gas and Vedanta Aluminium. The company's model combines mining, mineral processing, smelting, power generation and commodity sales, making it one of India's largest diversified natural-resources businesses.
