Zerodha lets people invest in shares without charging brokerage on equity delivery orders. It still earns money because some customers choose paid trading services, borrow through margin funding or use other chargeable account services. A delivery investor may also see taxes and exchange charges on a contract note, but most of those are collected for others. The business is easier to understand once a free investment order is separated from the rest of a customer's activity.

What exactly is free at Zerodha?

Equity delivery means buying shares to hold beyond the trading day. Zerodha's current price list states zero brokerage on these orders. Direct mutual fund investments are also listed with zero commissions. A customer can therefore use the platform for these investments without paying Zerodha an execution brokerage on each eligible delivery order.

“Zero brokerage” is not the same as “zero cost to invest.” Government securities transaction tax, stamp duty, exchange transaction charges and other applicable items can still appear. They are not a hidden Zerodha brokerage fee. The costs have different recipients and rules, so a reader should look at the actual contract note rather than assume every line belongs to the broker.

Holding shares also involves a demat account. Applicable account maintenance and charges for moving shares out can arise under the current terms. Zerodha lists different annual maintenance treatment for eligible basic services accounts and other accounts. These fees should be described separately from the free brokerage on buying and holding delivery shares.

Where does trading brokerage come from?

Intraday trading means buying and selling within the day. Futures and options are other market products that people use to take positions. Zerodha charges for executed orders in those paid segments. Its current schedule lists the lower of 0.03% or ₹20 on eligible intraday and futures orders, while options orders carry a flat ₹20 brokerage.

The fee is attached to the order, not to how much profit the trader makes. Someone can lose money on a trade and still pay brokerage, along with any applicable taxes and market charges. This is why active trading can produce broking income even though delivery investing does not.

A large number of customers does not guarantee the same brokerage every month. People can stop trading during a quiet market, and changes to market rules can reduce certain kinds of activity. Zerodha's founder described slower user growth and market activity in his August 2026 business update. Broking income depends on what customers actually choose to do, not only how many accounts exist.

The distinction also matters for readers worried that a free investor must eventually be pushed into frequent trading. Zerodha has said it does not use notifications to make users trade more or actively push borrowing. Whether or not a particular investor ever uses a paid product, the delivery brokerage remains listed at zero under the current pricing.

How does margin funding add income?

Margin trading facility, or MTF, lets an eligible customer buy certain shares with part of the purchase funded by Zerodha. The customer owes that funded amount and pays interest while it remains outstanding. That interest can be earned over time, unlike a brokerage fee earned when an order is executed.

In August 2026, Zerodha's founder said MTF contributed roughly 10% of company revenue. He also reported an MTF book of about ₹9,000 crore, while customer borrowing within it was about ₹6,000 crore on his description. Those sums represent funding exposure, not ₹9,000 crore of fee income.

Interest creates a more predictable source of revenue while customers keep funds outstanding, but the product has risks. A fall in share prices can trigger margin demands, and Zerodha needs capital and controls to support the borrowing. Its founder explicitly cautioned that MTF is unsuitable for many investors. The article should not celebrate the income without explaining the exposure that comes with it.

What else can Zerodha charge for?

Demat account maintenance is a small part of the business. The founder said it accounted for about 2% of revenue in August 2026. Some optional tools or services also have their own prices; the published charges list a paid Kite Connect developer plan, for example. None of these should be portrayed as the main answer to how Zerodha earns when its own update identifies brokerage and MTF as more important.

Several other amounts appearing on an investor's statement go to government, exchanges or depositories. Brokerage, maintenance and optional service charges must be separated from those collections. A trader's total bill is not the same as Zerodha's sales.

This distinction changed with market rules. The founder said the removal of a rebate on exchange transaction charges reduced revenue, and MTF income has helped offset that loss. Assuming that a broker can always keep part of every exchange charge would therefore give an outdated view of the business.

What do the latest results say?

Zerodha said its revenue was broadly steady in FY26 despite the loss of transaction-charge income and weaker market activity. Reported accounts put profit after tax at about ₹4,283 crore for the year, only modestly above FY25. Published top-line figures for Zerodha differ by reporting scope, so it is more useful here to follow the founder's description of flat revenue than to present unlike entity totals as a precise company-wide growth calculation.

That profit is substantial, but the business remains linked to market behaviour. Free delivery orders can help build trust and a large investor base; they do not themselves create brokerage. Revenue from paid trading changes with customer activity, and margin funding grows only if customers choose to borrow and Zerodha can manage the risk.

The mix of clients can change even when market prices barely move. A quiet period may reduce day traders' orders while long-term investors continue holding shares at Zerodha. Holdings can support some small account-related charges, but they do not automatically produce the brokerage that active orders once brought in. That is the practical reason the founder described broking as a business that must keep winning activity rather than simply waiting for account balances to compound.

Zerodha's cost structure also requires technology, compliance and capital long before the next order arrives. Its August 2026 update estimated that operating at its scale requires around ₹11,000 crore of capital. This is a management description of business requirements, not a bill charged to users. A profitable year therefore reflects both fee income and the ability to serve a very large base efficiently.

What is the lesson behind free delivery?

Zerodha has made one common investing activity free while charging clearly for other services. That can attract customers and make them comfortable using the same platform over time. Some will never trade actively, and others will use paid products. The model works at company scale when the income from customers who use those products covers the technology, service, compliance and capital the platform needs.

The FY26 update shows both sides of the strategy. A loyal user base and a profitable company do not prevent broking revenue from slowing when markets cool or rules change. Margin funding helps diversify income but brings a different risk. The right answer to the headline is therefore specific: equity delivery brokerage is zero, while paid trading, lending interest and smaller account or service charges finance the wider business.
