Pine Labs was established in India in 1998 and has developed from a payments technology company into a broader merchant-commerce and fintech platform. One of its important early products was Plutus, which allowed merchants to accept debit and credit cards and provide services such as instalment payments, promotions and loyalty benefits. Pine Labs now provides payment terminals, merchant software, online payment technology, credit-related solutions and prepaid and gifting infrastructure. Its acquisitions have expanded the business into areas such as stored-value products and consumer commerce. The company works with merchants, banks, brands and financial institutions rather than operating only as a consumer payments app. Pine Labs has also expanded outside India into markets in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Its business mainly earns revenue by providing technology and financial infrastructure for digital commerce.
