Abhiraj Singh Bhal

Abhiraj Singh Bhal is the co-founder, chairperson, managing director and chief executive officer of Urban Company.

Journey

Bhal studied electrical engineering at IIT Kanpur and management at IIM Ahmedabad. He worked at Boston Consulting Group, advising companies across markets, before leaving with former classmate Varun Khaitan to start Cinema Box, an in-transit entertainment idea. The founders closed that venture after it failed to establish a strong market.

Bhal and Khaitan then met technology entrepreneur Raghav Chandra, who had also been exploring mobility. The three founded UrbanClap in 2014 to organise fragmented home services through a managed marketplace. Renamed Urban Company in 2020, it expanded into beauty, cleaning, repair and appliance services, trained service partners and introduced products under the Native brand. The company listed in 2025, with Bhal in its top executive and board roles.

Working approach

Bhal has spoken about standardisation, partner training and customer trust as essential to service quality. The founders' willingness to shut earlier ideas helped them concentrate on a market where they could control more of the experience.

Assessment

He has led the creation of a difficult services marketplace, but Urban Company's standards must be evaluated alongside partner earnings, working conditions and grievance systems. Public-company discipline now adds another test to expansion and product ambitions.
