Background
About Amit Agarwal
Amit Agarwal is Senior Vice President, Emerging Markets and Selling Partner Services at Amazon and a member of the company's senior leadership team. He is one of the executives most closely associated with Amazon's expansion in India and helped lead the development and launch of Amazon.in.
Education and early career
Agarwal earned a B.Tech in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1995 and a master's degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1997. Before joining Amazon, he worked briefly at technology companies including Cambridge Technology Partners and Informatica in Silicon Valley.
He joined Amazon in 1999 as a software developer. Over the following years he held roles across technology, web services and international expansion. IIT Kanpur's alumni profile records that he returned to India in 2004 to help lead Amazon's development operations and later served as a technical adviser to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Launching Amazon's India marketplace
Agarwal subsequently moved into international expansion, working on Amazon's entry into markets including Italy and Spain before taking responsibility for India. Amazon began building the team for its Indian consumer business several years before the marketplace launch, and Amazon.in went live on 5 June 2013.
As Amazon's India country leader, Agarwal oversaw the early development of the marketplace, seller network and fulfilment capabilities. India's e-commerce regulations meant Amazon built its consumer operation around a marketplace model rather than simply reproducing the company's US retail structure. Amazon Seller Services Private Limited operates the Amazon.in marketplace.
Agarwal was elevated to a global senior vice-president role in 2017 while continuing to hold responsibility for India and, over time, a wider group of emerging international markets. In 2024, Samir Kumar became Amazon India's Country Manager, taking over the day-to-day leadership of the India consumer business, while Agarwal continued to oversee the broader emerging-markets organisation.
Current Amazon responsibilities
In February 2026, Amazon expanded Agarwal's responsibilities again. In addition to International Emerging Stores, he took leadership of Worldwide Selling Partner Services and Customer Trust. Amazon's August 2026 senior leadership listing identifies him as SVP, Emerging Markets and Selling Partner Services.
His current remit therefore extends beyond India. It includes Amazon Stores businesses across a group of emerging international markets as well as global organisations serving independent sellers. India remains within the international stores portfolio he oversees, but he is no longer the country's day-to-day Country Manager.
