Burzin Engineer

Burzin Engineer is a founder and Chief Reliability Officer of PhonePe. His work centres on the availability, resilience and infrastructure of the company’s technology systems.

Journey

Engineer studied computer engineering at the University of Mumbai and completed a master’s degree in computer science at the University of Southern California. He built his career in software infrastructure and engineering operations, areas where the quality of a system is measured by whether it remains dependable under heavy use.

He was part of the founding team of Mime360, a digital-media distribution platform created with Sameer Nigam and Rahul Chari. After Flipkart acquired Mime360 in 2011, Engineer worked at Flipkart in engineering roles. He later served as vice president for engineering and operations at M-GO, a digital entertainment service, before returning to India’s consumer-technology sector.

In December 2015, Engineer joined Nigam and Chari in founding PhonePe. The company built its first product around the Unified Payments Interface and launched in 2016 after being acquired by Flipkart. As usage grew, payment reliability became a core operating requirement because even a short interruption could affect a large number of consumers and merchants.

Engineer has led work on site reliability, data-centre strategy, infrastructure efficiency and continuity. PhonePe has experimented with technologies such as liquid-immersion cooling as it expanded its computing capacity.

Working approach

His role treats reliability as a product feature rather than a back-office task. Public writing by Engineer has focused on building systems that can scale without making outages or infrastructure costs an accepted consequence of growth.

Assessment

Engineer is the least publicly visible of PhonePe’s three founders, but his responsibility is fundamental to a payments company. His contribution is best judged through resilience, recovery, security and efficient scale rather than consumer-facing launches.
