Background

About Sameer Nigam

Sameer Nigam is the founder, whole-time director and chief executive officer of PhonePe, the digital-payments and financial-services company.

Journey

Nigam studied computer engineering at the University of Mumbai, completed a master’s degree in computer science at the University of Arizona, and earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He worked at Shopzilla in the United States, where he held product-management responsibilities and helped build shopping-search technology.

In 2009, Nigam started Mime360, a digital-media distribution platform, with Rahul Chari and Burzin Engineer among the early team. Flipkart acquired the company in 2011. Nigam joined Flipkart and served in senior engineering, product and marketing roles. The planned digital-content opportunity did not become a lasting standalone business, but the acquisition brought the future PhonePe founders together inside a large Indian consumer-internet company.

Nigam, Chari and Engineer founded PhonePe in December 2015. They recognised that the launch of the Unified Payments Interface could support a new kind of mobile payment product connected directly to bank accounts. Flipkart acquired PhonePe in 2016, shortly before the app launched, and Walmart later became the controlling shareholder through its investment in Flipkart. PhonePe subsequently separated from Flipkart and moved its domicile to India.

Under Nigam, the company expanded from UPI payments into merchant acceptance, insurance distribution, lending partnerships, stockbroking and other financial services.

Working approach

Nigam has emphasised open payment networks, localisation and long-term financial inclusion. His product background is visible in PhonePe’s effort to build separate but connected services around a widely used payments base.

Assessment

Nigam’s main achievement is turning early understanding of UPI into a mass-market platform. The next test is whether PhonePe can build profitable regulated businesses beyond payments while preserving reliability, consumer trust and clear separation between distribution and financial advice.
