Dhirubhai H. Ambani

Dhirubhai H. Ambani is the late founder of Reliance Industries and one of the central figures in the development of modern Indian private enterprise.

Journey

Born in Chorwad, Gujarat, in 1932, Ambani moved to Aden as a young man and worked for A. Besse & Co. The job exposed him to trading, commodities and international business. He returned to India in 1957 and started a yarn-trading business in Mumbai, initially operating with limited infrastructure and capital.

Ambani moved from trading into textiles under the Vimal brand, then expanded through polyester, petrochemicals and related industrial capacity. Reliance went public in 1977 and cultivated a broad base of retail shareholders at a time when equity ownership in India was comparatively narrow. He used scale, integration and capital markets to build the company. After a stroke in 1986, his sons took larger management roles. Ambani died in 2002, so his role is historical rather than current.

Working approach

He was known for ambitious scale, close attention to policy and markets, and explaining investment to ordinary shareholders. His career also attracted persistent debate about political access and business practices; those controversies should not be removed from a balanced assessment.

Assessment

Ambani transformed a trading operation into a major industrial group and broadened retail participation in Indian equities. His legacy combines industrial execution and financial innovation with continuing scrutiny of the relationship between large business and the state.
