Sachin Bansal

Sachin Bansal is the co-founder of Flipkart and the chairman and executive director of financial-services company Navi Limited.

Journey

Bansal earned a computer science and engineering degree from IIT Delhi. After a short period at Techspan, he worked at Amazon Web Services in India, where he met Binny Bansal. In 2007 the two left Amazon to start Flipkart as an online bookstore. They initially handled sourcing, packing and deliveries themselves while developing the website and learning how Indian customers approached online commerce.

Flipkart expanded from books into a broad marketplace and invested heavily in logistics, payments and customer service. Sachin served as chief executive and later executive chairman before leaving in 2018 when Walmart acquired control of the company. He then co-founded Navi with Ankit Agarwal. Navi has built digital lending, insurance, investment and payments businesses. Navi's official governance material identifies Sachin as chairman and executive director, with responsibility for long-term strategy, technology and scalable operating systems.

Working approach

Across both ventures, Bansal has favoured using technology to simplify services that were difficult to access. His departure from Flipkart was unplanned from his perspective, and he has discussed the need to rebuild purpose after that transition.

Assessment

Bansal helped establish large-scale Indian e-commerce and is now applying a similar digital-first approach to regulated finance. Navi's performance must be judged through compliance, underwriting quality, customer outcomes and durable economics as well as product speed.
