Sumatichandra H. Mehta

Sumatichandra Hemchand Mehta was the original promoter and founder associated with Safari Industries, the Indian luggage company that began as a partnership firm in 1974.

Building Safari Industries

Safari started by manufacturing plastic moulded luggage, at a time when the organised Indian luggage market already had established competitors. The business was later transferred to Safari Industries (India) Limited, incorporated in July 1980. The company’s original memorandum lists Sumatichandra Hemchand Mehta as one of its subscribers, and historical company records identify him as its promoter.

Under the original promoter group, Safari developed manufacturing operations for injection-moulded and vacuum-formed plastic products. Its manufacturing footprint included operations in Mumbai and Halol, Gujarat. The company became a public limited company in 1986 and raised capital to expand production capacity.

Public information on Mehta’s education, early career and management philosophy is limited, so these details cannot be reliably included. One verified public role outside Safari was his term as president of the Kutchi community organisation KCF from 1997 to 1999.

Transition from the promoter family

The most important later change in Safari’s ownership came in 2011-12. Sudhir Jatia agreed to acquire a controlling stake from members of the Mehta promoter group and other shareholders. A SEBI open-offer document records the September 2011 share purchase agreement and the outgoing shareholdings. Safari subsequently came under Jatia’s control and entered a new phase of expansion.

Mehta is identified as deceased in KCF’s historical records. Because of the limited reliable biographical material available publicly, it would be inaccurate to add unsupported details about his personal background, work philosophy or entrepreneurial motivations. His main documented business legacy is the creation and early development of Safari Industries before control passed to the Jatia-led promoter group.
