Bharat Electronics Limited, commonly called BEL, was established in 1954 by the Government of India under the Ministry of Defence. Because BEL is a state-created enterprise rather than an entrepreneurial company with an individual founder, its founder field is left blank. The company was created to meet India's specialised defence-electronics requirements. It now designs and manufactures radar systems, military communications equipment, electronic warfare systems, avionics, missile electronics, naval systems, electro-optics and command-and-control systems. BEL also participates in selected civilian businesses such as electronic voting machines, railway systems, cybersecurity, smart-city technology and space electronics. Much of its revenue comes from the Indian armed forces and other government customers. BEL operates multiple manufacturing and research facilities in India and has become one of the country's most important indigenous defence-electronics companies.
