Hindustan Aeronautics at a glance
Hindustan Aeronautics traces its origin to Hindustan Aircraft Limited, which was established in Bengaluru on 23 December 1940 by industrialist Walchand Hirachand in association with the Government of Mysore. The Government of India became a shareholder in 1941 and took over management in 1942. The company later became Hindustan Aeronautics Limited after corporate restructuring and consolidation. HAL designs, manufactures, upgrades and repairs military aircraft, helicopters, engines, avionics and related aerospace equipment. Important programmes include the Tejas light combat aircraft, Dhruv advanced light helicopter, Prachand light combat helicopter and various trainer and transport aircraft. HAL also manufactures several aircraft and engines under licence from foreign partners. Its main customer is India's defence establishment, especially the Indian Air Force, Army, Navy and Coast Guard.
