Suzlon Energy at a glance
Suzlon was founded in 1995 by Tulsi Tanti after unreliable electricity supply created problems for his textile business. He initially turned to wind power as a solution for his own energy needs and then recognised a wider commercial opportunity. Suzlon developed an integrated model covering wind-turbine design, manufacturing, project execution and long-term operations and maintenance. Its products include large wind-turbine generators used by utilities, companies and renewable-energy developers. The company expanded internationally during the 2000s and built research and manufacturing capabilities in several countries, although India remains its central market. After a period of financial stress and restructuring, Suzlon refocused on the growing Indian wind-energy market. Its business today mainly combines wind-turbine manufacturing, project development support and servicing of installed wind-energy equipment.
