Alok Bansal

Alok Bansal is a co-founder of Policybazaar and currently serves as Vice Chairman and Whole Time Director of PB Fintech, the listed parent of Policybazaar and Paisabazaar.

Early career

Bansal completed a Bachelor of Technology degree and later studied management at IIM Calcutta. Before Policybazaar, he worked across several large organisations including Voltas, General Electric, iGate and Mahindra & Mahindra. His background was therefore more corporate and process-oriented than the typical first-time internet founder when he joined the Policybazaar founding team.

Building Policybazaar

In 2008, Bansal joined Yashish Dahiya and Avaneesh Nirjar in starting Policybazaar. Bansal has explained that Dahiya brought exposure to the UK online-insurance market, while the Indian opportunity came from a basic structural problem: insurers depended heavily on agents and banks, and products were often designed around distribution incentives rather than the customer.

Policybazaar initially helped users compare insurance products and redirected them to insurers. Over time it moved deeper into transactions, customer service and technology. Bansal started as the company’s CFO and gradually expanded into strategy, HR, administration and other operating responsibilities.

Working style and leadership

Bansal has described himself as naturally process and control-oriented. Rather than defining rigid founder territories, he and Dahiya divided responsibilities according to the problem in front of them. Bansal tended to focus on whether the organisation was building repeatable processes and institutional controls around growth.

That approach became particularly important as Policybazaar scaled and later prepared to become a public company. PB Fintech listed in 2021. In 2022, Bansal moved out of the CFO position and was elevated to Executive Vice Chairman, with responsibility for inorganic growth, investment opportunities and investor relations. The company’s current governance disclosures identify him as Vice Chairman and Whole Time Director.

His professional profile is less centred on public founder storytelling than Dahiya’s. What stands out from Bansal’s own interviews is a preference for institution-building, process discipline and flexible founder roles rather than treating each function as a fixed personal territory.
