Harshil Mathur

Harshil Mathur is the co-founder and chief executive officer of payments and financial-technology company Razorpay.

Journey

Mathur studied technology at IIT Roorkee and worked at Schlumberger. While helping friends accept online payments, he and college friend Shashank Kumar found that payment-gateway onboarding was slow and poorly designed for start-ups and smaller businesses. They entered Y Combinator and founded Razorpay in 2014.

Razorpay first simplified payment acceptance through developer-friendly software and faster merchant onboarding. It later added business banking, payroll, lending and payment infrastructure. The company also navigated regulatory restrictions on onboarding new merchants, using the period to strengthen compliance before approvals resumed. Razorpay's official leadership page identifies Mathur as co-founder and CEO.

Working approach

Mathur has stressed clear communication, customer focus and building for businesses ignored by older financial providers. The company’s regulatory experience underlined that product speed in payments must be matched by controls and supervision.
