Shashank Kumar

Shashank Kumar is the co-founder and managing director of Razorpay.

Journey

Kumar studied computer science at IIT Roorkee and worked as an engineer at Microsoft in the United States. He returned to India and joined Harshil Mathur after the pair encountered the difficulty small companies faced when integrating online payments. They founded Razorpay in 2014 and joined Y Combinator.

Kumar built the early payment technology and served as chief technology officer before moving to managing director. Razorpay expanded from a gateway into payment orchestration, business banking, payroll and other financial software. Its official leadership material now identifies Kumar as MD and co-founder, with responsibility spanning technology, policy and long-term company building.

Working approach

His engineering background supports a product philosophy centred on clean APIs, reliability and reducing work for business customers. In a regulated system, that simplicity has to sit on top of detailed risk, reconciliation and compliance processes.

Assessment

Kumar's contribution is the technical and institutional architecture behind Razorpay. The challenge is to preserve reliability and regulatory trust while the company grows across products and geographies.
