Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata

Founder, Tata group

Background

About Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was the entrepreneur who established the business that developed into the Tata group. Born in Navsari in 1839, he moved to Bombay as a teenager and studied at Elphinstone College, completing his education in 1858. He then joined the trading business run by his father, Nusserwanji Tata, gaining experience in commerce before starting independently.

Building the Tata enterprise

In 1868, at the age of 29, Jamsetji established his own trading firm with capital of ₹21,000. His early commercial experience and visits to Britain drew his attention to the textile industry. In 1869, he acquired a struggling oil mill in Bombay, converted it into a cotton mill and renamed it Alexandra Mill. He later sold the operation and continued studying textile manufacturing in Britain.

Jamsetji subsequently established the Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company in Nagpur, whose Empress Mills began production in 1877. Building a textile business away from Bombay allowed him to locate operations closer to cotton-growing regions and transport links. His businesses also became associated with employee-welfare measures that were unusual in Indian industry at the time.

Expanding beyond textiles

Jamsetji's ambitions eventually extended well beyond textiles. He pursued plans for an Indian steel enterprise, hydroelectric power generation, advanced scientific education and a major hotel in Bombay. The Taj Mahal Palace opened in 1903, during his lifetime. His plans for steel, hydroelectric power and the Indian Institute of Science were largely completed by his successors after his death in 1904.

The business organisation created around these ventures evolved through Tata & Sons and ultimately Tata Sons. Jamsetji's sons and business partners continued the industrial projects he had initiated. Tata's official history dates the beginning of the wider Tata group to Jamsetji's trading firm established in 1868, making him the central founder of the group rather than merely an executive of the later incorporated Tata Sons company.
