Background
About Ishan Bansal
Ishan Bansal is a co-founder, whole-time director and chief financial officer of Groww. He leads finance at the investment platform and its listed parent, Billionbrains Garage Ventures Limited.
Journey
Bansal graduated from BITS Pilani and completed an MBA in finance at XLRI Jamshedpur. He is also a CFA charterholder. His education and early work gave him a combination of corporate-finance, investment and technology-sector experience.
Before Groww, Bansal worked in corporate development and mergers and acquisitions at Naspers. He later joined Flipkart’s corporate-development team. These roles involved evaluating businesses, transactions and capital allocation rather than building only a consumer-facing product.
In 2016, Bansal joined Flipkart colleagues Lalit Keshre, Harsh Jain and Neeraj Singh in founding Groww. They had observed that many Indians with investable income stayed away from financial markets because products and processes were difficult to understand. Groww began by simplifying access to direct mutual funds and later expanded into stocks, derivatives, commodities, bonds, credit and wealth management.
Bansal’s role has covered financial planning, fundraising, capital structure, regulatory reporting and the economics of new business lines. Those responsibilities became more important as Groww moved from a private start-up to a listed company in 2025. He has also participated with the other founders in early-stage investing outside Groww.
Working approach
His professional background suggests a disciplined, capital-allocation lens within a product-led founding team. This is particularly relevant when a financial platform expands into services that have different regulatory requirements, risk profiles and paths to profitability.
Assessment
Bansal provides the financial and transaction expertise that complements Groww’s product and engineering strengths. His continuing challenge is to support growth while maintaining strong controls, transparent reporting and enough capital for businesses that mature at different speeds.
